CLEVELAND — The Indians ahead of Tuesday’s non-waiver trade deadline made a needed secondary move, acquiring center fielder Leonys Martin, along with pitching prospect Kyle Dowdy, from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for shortstop prospect Willi Castro.

Martin adds some stability to center field in the wake of Bradley Zimmer’s season-ending surgery, which has come after a flurry of injuries and inconsistency for the Indians in the outfield outside of Michael Brantley in left field.

Martin, 30, has been having a quality season with the Tigers, especially defensively. Martin is hitting .251 with a .731 OPS, nine home runs, 15 doubles, three triples, 29 RBIs and seven stolen bases.

Rays trade Archer to Pirates for Austin Meadows, Tyler Glasnow

Glasnow, 24, is a hard-throwing potential impact starter who has had control issues in the majors but starred in the minors, working now out of the Pirates bullpen with 72 strikeouts in 56 innings.

Archer, 29, has been the leader of the Rays rotation for the past several years, making four straight openingday starts and setting an example with his diligent workout regimen and preparation.

Marlins deal Cameron Maybin to Mariners ahead of trade deadline

Just hours after making their first move ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline, the Marlins have struck another deal.

Miami is trading outfielder Cameron Maybin to the Seattle Mariners for minor league shortstop Bryson Brigman and international bonus money, according to multiple reports. Playing for High-A Modesto, the 23-year-old is hitting .304 with 13 doubles, seven triples and 38 RBIs in 98 games this season.

Seattle’s third-round pick in 2016, Brigman is rated as the team’s 19th best prospect, by MLB.com. He previously played college baseball at the University of San Diego.

The Marlins traded reliever Brad Ziegler to Arizona for Double-A reliever Tommy Eveld just hours earlier.

Phillies acquire catcher Ramos from Rays, reliever Loup from Jays

BOSTON — With time running down before Tuesday’s deadline to make trades without waivers, the Phillies got creative in their pursuit of more offense and satisfied their need for another left-handed reliever.

The Phillies acquired veteran catcher Wilson Ramos and cash considerations from the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named or cash. Ramos, 30, hasn’t played since July 14 because of a left hamstring injury but is expected back from the disabled list in August.

After completing the Ramos deal, the Phillies got lefty reliever Aaron Loup from the Toronto Blue Jays for Triple A right-hander Jacob Waguespack. Including last Friday’s trade for infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, the Phillies acquired three major-league players without giving up a player off their big-league roster.

Ramos, 30, was batting .297 with a .346 on-base percentage, 14 home runs and a .488 slugging percentage in 315 plate appearances for the Rays this season. He’s eligible for free agency after the season.
