Proud to fly the American flag

- ELLEN WECKERLE

Editor: I was appalled to have read the recent letter to the editor in regards to “flags flying.” How dare someone who obviously is not proud to be an American have the nerve to tell anyone when or where to fly a flag of any size. My husband and I have been displaying our flag on our porch and on a flagpole for 25 years, ever since we purchased our first home together.

The American flag is a symbol of every freedom that our military has fought for. My father fought in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge in Patton’s Third Army. My father-in-law was in the Korean War. I had friends that fought in Vietnam. We are honoring all who have fought and all who been lost every single day. We, as proud Americans, do not need a holiday to express our patriotism. There are no rules that tell us what days we are allowed to fly the red, white and blue.

This is not political in any way shape or form. It brings tears to my eyes when I hear our national anthem and I think of how proud my grandparents were of their citizenship. If Ms. Frederico, the person who wrote that abhorrent letter in regards to our national symbol of freedom, does not like to see our flag flying every single day and is offended by the sight of the flag, then she can close her eyes around her neighborhood, stay inside or better yet, move.

I have a question for that person and the others like her: what next? Would they also like to see the flags removed from public buildings, not flown at the Olympics, not presented to families of the fallen at the graveside or even have them removed from caskets returned from war?
