Bottom line: Get Trump out of office

- JOANNE DELSOLAR Lodi

Editor: Thanks to Mr. Vetica and Mr. Portal for contributions to the discussion on democracy. Mr. Portal’s letter was a rant on California and New York having the ability to rule the entire U.S. As it now stands, the Midwest seems to be the determining factor in our elections.

Mr. Vetica’s claim that President Obama favored the rich is just silly. Trump is on record telling rich cronies at Mar-a-Lago that he “had just made them a lot richer” after the passage of the trillion dollar tax cut that favored corporations and the obscenely rich.

Clearly stated in my letter was my agreement that the U.S. is a republic. That is irrefutable.

This in no way negates the fact that the U.S. is a representative democracy. If that were not the case, there would be no need for “We the People” to elect our congressmen and senators — a privilege that Republicans want to change in order to stifle our voices.

When the Founding Fathers argued against “democracy,” they did not want direct democracy, they endeavored to allow each state to have an equal say in government — in a representative democracy. What they actually created was a government ruled by the rich because they deemed the average citizen to be too ignorant to participate in government.

It was “one man, one vote,” because only men, land holders, were allowed to vote. Women and African Americans could not vote until the 19th and 14th amendments, respectively, were passed.

All of this is actually irrelevant, because now we have a man who wants to impose absolute rule on the U.S., and an impotent congress afraid to oppose the dictator’s wishes.

Trump declared in a recent Fox interview that the stock market will crash and we “will all be poor” if he is impeached. I am willing to be poor if we can get this idiot out of the White House.
