Galt loses opener to Fortuna

- By Mikael Honzell

GALT — On Friday night, the Galt High football team was looking to give its new coach Tim Cobleigh his first victory of the season.

But Fortuna, which won the CIF Division V state championship en route to a 13-2 record last season, killed the Warriors’ momentum in the first quarter. That helped Fortuna, from the North Coast Section, post a 44-13 win over the Warriors at Hawks Stadium. The Warriors came out in their new offense, the wing-T.

“This is a four-year system for them (offense),” Warriors assistant coach Anthony Trejo said. “They had four different systems in the last four years, so this is the first year we’re running this offense.”

The Warriors’ Ozze Chavez returned the ball to the 50 yard line to start the game. It wasn’t long until the Warriors made their first touchdown of the night when quarterback Robert Bulahan Jr. threw to Marcelo Lopez of 29 yards for a 6-0 lead. The extra-point kick missed.

But was a while before Galt (0-1) scored again, as the Huskies took charge.

The Huskies’ Levi Nyberg returned the ball to the 38 yard line on kickoff. From there Owen Farmer caught a 22 yard complete pass that led to a rush by Nyberg into the end zone. The complete of the 2-point

conversion gave Fortuna an 8-6 lead.

Galt had more possesions, but was unable to move the ball. That was a plus for the Huskies, who got some assistance from Kevin Gage on a punt return to Galt’s 44-yard line. From there, the Huskies gradually worked their way up field which eventually lead to another touchdown that was made by Nyberg, but failed to complete the extra two point attempt, leaving the score at 14-6.

Kickoff to the Warriors gave way to a short rush, landing them at the 34 yard line.

It wasn’t long before Huskies forced another Warrior turnover.

On the upswing, Galt defensive tackle Andrew Rocha had three sacks.

The Warriors received the ball at the beginning of the second quarter, but it was turned over after the Huskies sacked Bulahan Jr. on third down.

But the Warriors’ defense kept the Huskies at bay, thanks to an incomplete pass on third down and a punt.

This possession by the Huskies didn’t last long due to failed plays and an incomplete pass on third down, leading them to punting the ball on fourth down.

However, they received the ball again shortly after the punt at the 50 yard line. Fortuna (1-1) gradually worked its way up field, getting help from Jason Besanceney, who rushed toward the end zone on a 20 yard run. An incomplete 2point conversion still gave the Huskies a 22-6 lead.

The Huskies scored their next touchdown when Travis Lourenzo scored on a 3-yard run to make it 30-6 near the end of the second quarter.

Galt had a good kickoff return from Braden Forbes. But the Huskies got the ball back, thanks to their defense that picked off a Bulahan Jr.

The Huskies scored twice in the second half to win the game.

Galt’s last touchdown came late in the third quarter when Alex Rodriguez scored on a 48yard run.

“I feel like we learned a lot tonight,” Trejo said, “Obviously we have a lot of work to do but I believe that we’ll get there if we polish some things up.”
