Tigers outgunned in road loss to Stagg

STOCKTON — Stagg fans eager to see some offensive fireworks were delighted to finally see their team, and the Delta Kings’ run-and-gun offense didn’t disappoint in their home opener.

Stagg senior quarterback Cameron Deville completed 16 of 25 passes for 296 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for another as the Delta Kings raced away for a 61-14 nonleague victory over the Tokay Tigers Friday night at Stagg High School.

Deville, who’s thrown four touchdown passes in each of his first two games, has 13 throwing scores and 869 yards

passing for Stagg (2-1), which shrugged off a sluggish start.

Stagg scored on its first possession, a seven-play 56-yard drive, capped by Deville’s fouryard toss to Keith Smith early in the game.

But Deville lost one of his favorite targets, senior receiver Dominique James, to an injury in the end zone and the Delta Kings followed with its only punt of the game.

Stagg took a 14-0 lead on Phoenix Smith’s 50-yard touchdown catch.

Tokay (0-3) later held on fourth and goal from the one, but Stagg’s defense held and Deville engineered a 33-yard drive, calling his own number from the two for a 20-0 lead early in the second and the offense was humming.

Stagg’s Phoenix Smith reeled in seven catches for 171 yards and three touchdowns, while teammate Keith Smith caught two touchdowns for the third game in a row on five catches for 66 yards.

“My receivers came up big,” Deville said. “Every time I throw (the ball) I know they’re going to be there. My line did a great job protecting me so I was able to get my throws off. I think my receivers are the best in the area. We’re clicking on all cylinders and we did a good job showing that tonight.”

Stagg senior Niko Perez snagged a tipped Varney pass for an interception on the first play of the second half and Deville found Phoenix Smith three plays later in the left corner of the end zone for a 48-0 advantage less than two minutes into the third quarter.

Stagg sophomore quarterback Eric Hankins came in and threw an 18-yard strike to junior teammate Stephfan Jackson with 7:57 left in the third.

Joshua Lewis added a 38yard touchdown run late in the quarter to push the Delta Kings’ lead to 61-8.

Nathan Branco rumbled in from inside the 10 in the fourth quarter for Tokay’s final score.

Jose Correa, who leads team in tackles, added his second sack of the season to stop the Tigers’ drive in the third quarter.

“Our offense brought it tonight and did a heck of a job,” Stagg coach Don Norton said. “It starts with our quarterback. He does a good job throwing and Keith Smith does a heck of a good job catching. We’ve got a lot of weapons on offense and we’re still trying to get another couple of guys healthy.”
