Hispanic Business Committee to host fundraiser dinner Saturday

- By Kyla Cathey

School has only just begun for the year, but Lodi’s Hispanic Business Committee is already looking ahead to graduation in June.

For the third year, the committee — part of the Lodi District Chamber of Commerce — plans to raise money for scholarships. It’s kicking off the effort with its annual fundraiser dinner on Saturday evening.

They’re hoping it’s a huge success once again.

“We raised over $6,500 last year,” said Carmen Bais, chairwoman of the committee.

That was split between four students who met the committee’s application requirements: They showed financial need, had a GPA of at least 2.5, and had a Hispanic background. Each of the students also had to write an essay and receive a recommendation from someone outside of their families.

This year, the committee is planning a new boost for the Lodi community: a grant for small businesses. Committee members hope the grant will allow a local business to complete a small project like fresh paint or installing security cameras, upgrade a computer, or pay for a much-needed service.

Like in previous years, the scholarships will be open to any graduating seniors in Lodi Unified School District, provided they meet the committee’s requirements.

Students don’t need to be planning to attend a four-year university — scholarships can be used for trade school or community college tuition as well. Interested students should get in touch with their academic counselor.

One big bonus for any students planning to apply is a solid record of working for their local community.

“Community service is very important to us,” Bais said.

But the Hispanic Business Committee won’t be worrying about applications yet; first, they’re looking to raise the funds that will go toward the scholarships.

That’s where Saturday’s dinner comes into play. The event will be held at the American Legion Hall, headlined by Latin Magic. The band will cover Latin hits, top 40 pop songs, oldies, classics and audience requests — they’re versatile, said Bais and fellow organizer Marina Narvarte, membership coordinator for the Lodi District Chamber of Commerce.

The menu will feature steak, potatoes, carrots, salad, bread and homemade cheesecake from Crystal Rose Confectionery in Lodi. Hollywood Cafe is catering the event, and Arbor Senior Living donated some of the ingredients for the meal.

Tickets are still available, and the Lodi community is invited to come out and enjoy an evening of great food, energetic music and camaraderie, all for a good cause.

There is still an opportunity for other businesses to get involved before Saturday.

“If any businesses want to donate a basket to showcase their business, that would be wonderful,” Narvarte said.

“Or buy a table,” Bais added.
