Tigers welcome Titans back to Grape Bowl
One of two non-league games remain on the Tokay High football team’s schedule.
Chavez is one of those opponents that is making a return trip to the Grape Bowl. Tokay will be playing its third home game in four weeks, as today’s game is scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. kickoff.
The Tigers have added another quarterback to their roster. Sophomore Jacob Varney (5-foot-11 and 172 pounds) was moved up from the junior varsity team. He took most of the snaps in the Tigers’ 61-14 loss to Stagg on Aug. 30. Varney played for senior quarterback Chase Howell, who sprained his right ankle when Tokay (0-3) fell to Bear Creek 58-16.
“We pulled Varney up due to Chase’s injury,” said Tokay coach Michael Holst. “(Varney) played well for us, but we are hoping Chase will be healthy soon.”
The Tigers’ other quarterbacks are senior Marcell Norwood, who threw a touchdown pass against Bear Creek, and junior Colby Baker.
As Tri-City Athletic League action is just around the corner — Tokay will host Tracy at the Grape Bowl on Friday, Sept. 28 — the bulk of the league teams are adjusting their rosters. The Tigers are no exception, as they have moved up another sophomore in strong safety Jose Bravo (5’6 and 135) for a 38-player roster.
“We feel that he will add another dimension for us out on the perimeter,” said Holst of Bravo. “We have continually moved guys around to spots that are best fits for them and the program, so there might be some changes come
