Flames win at preseason tournament; league next

The Lodi High girls tennis team went 5-0 over the weekend to win the Division V bracket of the California Tennis Classic in Clovis.

Though the team went undefeated, only one of the Flames won every match she was in — Johnna Schroeder went 4-0 playing No. 2 singles, and added a doubles victory with teammate Mia Carouba.

While the normal high school lineup is six singles matches and three doubles matches, the tournament head three singles and three doubles for each match.

Lodi began with a 6-0 sweep of Immanuel High out of Reedley, though just barely as No. 1 singles player needed a third-set tiebreaker to win 46, 6-4, 12-10. Schroeder won her match 6-0, 6-0, and Carouba won 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, CeCe Chinchiolo and Anna Spaletta won 7-5, 6-2, Julia Sherman and Jenna Dougherty won 6-1, 6-0 and the third team of Alyssa Mataga and Julia Archibeque won 6-4, 6-4.

Up next was a 4-2 win over Santa Ynez, with singles wins by Schroeder (6-7, 6-2, 10-8) and Carouba (3-3, retired) and doubles wins by Chinchiolo and Dougherty (6-1, 7-6) and Mary Barwes and Ally Clayworth (6-4, 6-4).

Doubles saved the day in a 4-2 win

over Nevada Union, with Spaletta accounting for the only singles victory. Schroeder and Carouba won at No. 1 doubles (6-2, 6-4), Mataga and Archibeque won at No. 2 doubles (6-3, 6-4) and Emily Johnson and Barwes won at No. 3 doubles (6-1, 6-1).

Against Buchanan’s second team, Lodi pulled out another 4-2 win, with Barajas (6-1, 6-1) and Schroeder (6-1, 6-1) getting singles victories. At No. 2 doubles, Sherman and Dougherty won 6-4, 6-4, and at No. 3 doubles, Clayworth and Barwes won 6-3, 6-2.

In the championsh­ip match against Selma, Barajas (6-2, 60) and Schroeder (6-1, 6-4) won at No. 1 and 2 singles, while Carouba and Chinchiolo won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Dougherty and Mataga won 61, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles for a 4-2 victory.

With that victory under their belt, the Flames head into Tri-City Athletic League play today with a road match against Lincoln.
