Near the end of the school day on Tuesday afternoon, a 15-year-old male student at Lodi High School was found with an unloaded handgun and loose ammunition, according to Sgt. Josh Redding of the Lodi Police department.

“The school resource officer received information that a student had a handgun in his backpack,” Redding said. “The student was contacted and searched, a handgun and ammunition were found and the situation was resolved.”

Lodi High principal Bob Lofsted sent an email to parents on Tuesday saying the student was taken into custody and that no students were threatened or harmed, although at least one student was frightened.

“It was after school, I heard about it,” Cicelia Isordia, a Lodi High senior said. “I was very surprised. I was kind of scared, but I heard that the person got caught. I heard that people saw police officers with guns here. No one was really talking about it (on campus).”

Lodi Unified School district issued the following statement:

“The safety and well-being of our students is the District’s top priority. We can confirm that school officials from Lodi High School located an unloaded handgun and loose ammunition today on campus. Lodi High, in conjunction with the Lodi Police Department, acted swiftly to remove the gun from campus. All students are safe and no one was harmed or threatened. We will continue to work with the Lodi Police Department to ensure the safety of our students.”
