STOCKTON — Just after opening one facility in Stockton, online giant Amazon has already announced plans to open a second location in town.

The company and the Stockton City Council made the announcement Monday afternoon at the new site, located at 4325 Newcastle Road.

Andrew Sweatman, a regional director of operations for Amazon, said the facility will be a complete fulfillment center, meaning employees will process orders directly from customers, and also package and deliver orders.

The merchandise the facility will mainly handle, he said, is larger items such as kayaks, patio furniture or rugs.

He said the company hopes to have the facility operational within the coming year.

“We have a tremendous customer base in this area, and a terrific work population that is able to pair perfectly with growth and demand,” Sweatman said.

The building will work together with the other facilities in the region to deliver on-time delivery at the lowest cost possible. “Over the past couple years we’ve been in this community ... we’ve never had a problem finding enough workers to meet customer demands and to continue to drive the business forward.”

Amazon’s first facility in Stockton, a 600,000-square-foot building located at 4723 S. B St., was officially opened Monday and brought 1,000 jobs to the region.

The Newcastle Road facility will be 1 million square feet in size, generating an additional 1,000 jobs in the area.

Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs said Monday’s announcement shows the community that the city has the momentum to continue bringing good things to the region.

“People are looking at Stockton as not a place to run from, but a place to invest in and partner with,” he said. “As we continue to grow our economy and continue to provide jobs for our folks, we’ll continue to see good things happen in our city.”

Vice Mayor Elbert Holman thanked Amazon for the fortitude to increase employment in the city.

“It means jobs,” he said. “One of our strategic plans was to bring jobs to our community, and (this is) fantastic. Just look here, ... we just brought a whole bunch of jobs to the community.”

The new facility will be located within Councilman Jesús Andrade’s district.

“(People) are watching what’s happening here,” he said. “The story of Stockton is being told, it’s a new narrative, and the story of Stockton is about leadership.

It’s one about resiliency, perseverance, and it’s something that we’re proud to partner with.”

Other Amazon fulfillment facilities in Central and Northern California are located in Tracy, Manteca, Fresno, Newark, Patterson, Sacramento and Vacaville.

According to the company’s Wikipedia page, the company is the second-largest employer in the United States, with 541,900 employees worldwide.
