New York Giants backup quarterback Kyle Lauletta was arrested Tuesday in Weehawken, N.J., while on his way to practice, allegedly almost hitting a police officer with his vehicle while trying to escape, police said.

Around 8 a.m., Lauletta, 22, was seen driving his 2017 Jaguar erratically in heavy traffic near the Pleasant Avenue entrance to Route 495, police said in a statement.

Despite the police officer telling him to stay in his lane, Lauletta made an illegal turn toward the tunnel and almost hit the officer, police said in a statement.

Even when another officer finally stopped Lauletta, he refused to provide his license and registration or to exit his car, according to police.

Lauletta was charged with reckless driving, disregarding an officer’s directions, improper turn in marked traffic lane and failure to remain in a marked lane, according to the statement. He was also charged with multiple disorderly persons offenses, including eluding police, obstructing administration of law and resisting arrest.

While investigating, police discovered that Lauletta’s Jaguar had been involved in a similar incident at the same location on Monday. The car did not stop at the scene of Monday’s incident and a summons was issued by mail to Lauletta.

It was unclear if Lauletta was also driving on Monday.

Also on Monday, Lauletta was part of a group of Giants rookies that visited patients at Hackensack University Medical Center.

According to an NFL Network report, citing Weehawken police sources, Lauletta told officers on Tuesday that he was rushing to work with the Giants because he was going to be late.

Prior to news of the incident involving Lauletta becoming public, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur was asked by a reporter in his post-practice news conference Tuesday if all players were at practice, and Shurmur indicated that was the case.
