CHICAGO — A woman was shot and killed after a gunman jumped into a parked car where she sat with two children and another woman on the Northwest Side Wednesday night, according to Chicago police.

The gunman jumped into the black car shortly after 9:20 p.m. near the 2200 block of North Long Avenue and told the driver to pull away, police said. Over the next few blocks, the man shot Maria D. Coronel, 21, twice in the head.

The gunman took cash from her, then got out of the car and ran away, police said.

Coronel was pronounced dead at the scene on Belden Avenue just south of Blackhawk Park, where the black sedan remained parked facing east on Belden, its front doors open and lights flashing, as police investigated.

The crime scene extended west from Lavergne Avenue and north into the park, where yellow tape was tied to blue and green trash and recycling bins.

Colonel lived about a mile from the attack, in the 4900 block of West North Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police said no one was in custody. Colonel was among four people shot over a two-hour period Wednesday night in Chicago.

In East Garfield Park, two men were shot while sitting in a parked car around 10:10 p.m. near the intersection of Francisco Avenue and Warren Boulevard, police said.

A 22-year old was shot in the face and a 19-year-old was shot in the side. The older man was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, and the younger man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was stabilized, according to police.

Police stretched crime scene tape around each side of the intersection. An officer placed a yellow evidence marker on the street next to a piece of clothing, then continued pacing around the scene. The officer shined a flashlight into a dark-colored car parked facing north on Francisco, just south of Warren, its doors wide open.

At the north end of the scene, a group of women in Halloween costumes walked up to the tape.

“Somebody deceased?” one woman asked.

“Not sure,” an officer replied as the women slipped past the tape, continuing on their way.

Earlier in the night, a 37-year-old woman was shot in the leg in the Far South Side's Golden Gate neighborhood, police said.
