IN SPORTS: GALT ATHLETES MAKE ALL-SVC

The Sierra Valley Conference released its all-league teams earlier this week, and the two Galt schools, Galt and Liberty Ranch, had eight all-league football selections between them.

Both team’s quarterbac­ks made the team — Liberty Ranch’s Matthew Hopper completed 53 out of 118 passes for 957 yards, nine touchdowns and six intercepti­ons to help the Hawks to a 4-6 record overall and 2-3 in the SVC, while Galt’s Robert Bulahan Jr. completed 133 of 264 passes for 1,702 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 intercepti­ons to help Galt go 4-6 overall and 0-5 in the SVC.

Other selections for Liberty Ranch included running back/linebacker Gabe Nino, who racked up 1,206 yards on 138 rushes and 458 yards on 27 catches, with eight rushing touchdowns and four receiving touchdowns to go along with 54 tackles and two intercepti­ons on the other side of the ball; lineman Gabriel Fernandez, who played both sides of the line and tallied two tackles; and lineman/tight end Austin Davis, who had 12 catches for 245 yards and a pair of touchdowns along with 19 tackles on the other side of the ball.

Galt’s other football selections were tight end/linebacker Andrew Rocha, who had 12 rushes for 53 yards and two touchdowns, five receptions for 21 yards and a score, plus nine tackles, a fumble recovery and two caused; wide receiver Marcelo Lopez, who had 39 catches for 588 yards and 10 touchdowns, along with 17 tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery on defense; and Connor Hensen, a fullback/linebacker who had four tackles and a fumble caused.

The league’s MVP went to Rosemont running back Dalonte Baskervill­e, while the offensive MVP went to Union Mine quarterbac­k Clayton Byer and defensive MVP was shared between Union Mine linebacker Cameron Beck and Bradshaw Christian linebacker Phil Conner. Bradshaw Christian’s Drew Bickert won Coach of the Year.

In girls golf, Liberty Ranch’s Brittany Cooper and Johnna Wise were coMVPs, with teammate Alejandra Oceguera also on the all-SVC team.

In volleyball, Liberty Ranch had three players make all-SVC — Jessica Smith, Giovanna Parino and Brooklyn Young — while Galt had two — Mizan Johnson and Haley Sanchez, as the Hawks went 7-3 in league play and Galt went 010.

For the Hawks, Smith, a senior middle blocker, had 218 kills, 28 aces, 69 blocks and 101 digs. Parino, a senior setter, had 40 kills, 30 aces, 19 blocks, 232 digs and 549 assists. Young, a senior outside hitter, had 221 kills, 39 aces and 249 digs.

In boys cross country, Liberty Ranch had three allSVC selections in Xavier Morales, Braden Birkes and Adam Lima, while Galt had one in Ethan Reece.

In girls cross country, Galt’s Madison Petersen was the only local selection.
