Bailey shines as A’s homer six times vs. Mariners

- By Curtis Pashelka

OAKLAND — Homer Bailey had to like what transpired Wednesday when he made his debut in an Oakland A’s Kelly Green and Gold uniform.

Not only did Bailey allow just two earned runs over six innings, but he saw his new teammates smack six home runs.

Mark Canha and Jurickson Profar both hit two homers and Chad Pinder and Ramon Laureano each added one as the A’s flattened the Seattle Mariners, 10-2, at the Coliseum to extend their win streak to six games.

Continuing their post-All Star Break tear, the A’s outscored their opposition 40-9 during their perfect five-game homestand to temporarily move to within four games of the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West. The Astros play the Los Angeles Angels late Wednesday night.

Bailey, acquired from the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, gave up both of his runs in the second, as Dylan Moore and Dee Gordon each had an RBI to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. Profar answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to tie the game, and Canha gave the A’s the lead for good with a solo homer to left in the fourth inning.

Canha then went deep to center field in the sixth, again off Tommy Milone, for the first two-home run game of his MLB career.

Bailey allowed seven hits and had six strikeouts over six innings.

A’s third baseman Matt Chapman left Wednesday’s game after two innings with what was described by the team as left ankle soreness. Chapman batted in the first inning and appeared to be walking a bit gingerly after he fouled off a pair of pitches from Mariners right-hander Erik Swanson. He remained in the game and played third base in the top of the second.

After Chapman was lifted, Robbie Grossman entered the game and took over left field from Pinder, who moved to third base.
