The fall season ushers in new events

-

With a nip in the air and a few raindrops, fall has arrived and with it all the events dormant during the summer.

The Grape Festival and its fabulous volunteers can now relax for a bit after working to make it a success. While I didn’t go, my great grandson Arby could hardly wait, not to be on rides (sister Avery loves those) but to enjoy all that happens at this special event.

And the 150th Anniversary of Galt was a huge success, as was noted in Tuesday’s paper. Last Saturday you felt like you were reliving times past — medicine shows, melodramas, buggy and tractor rides, a special train for children, shootouts, special jazz and regular bands, and ragtime pianists throughout Downtown Galt. People were asked to dress the part and they did — even on the hot day — from girls and women in flowing, authentic dresses to men with vests, cowboy or derby hats, and perhaps a gun at their side. Especially enjoyed Wyatt Earp and his “saloon” girl. Vendors were everywhere and I must salute the police presence which made everyone feel more secure.

The event was sponsored by the Galt Chamber of Commerce and the Galt Area Historical Society. While there was a huge group of volunteers to make it successful, special recognition to Bonnie Rodriquez, Chamber president; and Shawn and Heather Farmer who inspired all. Thanks to all volunteers for demonstrating the kind of town Galt is.

Now to two special events on Sept. 26 that compliment each other.

Do you go out to dinner before attending a concert?

The Woman’s Club of Lodi has the perfect solution.

They’ll be holding their annual

German dinner on the 26th at the

Woman’s Club. Menu is bratwurst, cabbage roll, sauerkraut, knefla, carrot salad and kuchen. And you can either eat in from 5 to 7 p.m. or pick up at the drive-through on Lee Street from 4 to 7 p.m. If you are dining in, there will be a bar available. An extra attraction is your purchase of a whole kuchen (peach, apricot and prune) for $10. Tickets are $15 with advanced ticket purchase advised (call Linda at 209-609-6153). To order kuchen call LeAnn at 209-712-0306. (We’ve come a long way since the Tokay Attendance Office, haven’t we, LeAnn?)

When you finish eating you can stroll or drive over to Hutchins Street Square for the first Lodi Community Concert Association presentation at 7 p.m. And wow, did my column change right before I submitted it. Fortunately for the concert association they have a fabulous replacement for concert attendees.

Featured now are Rodney Marsalis and the Philadelphia Brass Band. This group comes from the original Whitten (hope spelled correctly!) Marsalis Family from New Orleans. This family traveled throughout the U.S. and internationally including the White House and Kennedy Center. Now cousin Rodney takes over. According to the senior Marsalis, “Rodney is the best trumpeter of all of us.” You’ll be in for a treat!

But what a five-day period it has been for Judy Halstead and the concert board!

What a great way to end September.

As you remember, M5 Mexican Brass was scheduled to perform until they had VISA problems. They have toured for seven years in the United States and I’m sure never expected this — but times have changed.

And this brings me to an interesting phone conversation I had recently.

As I talked to a friend from another state, I mentioned that the traffic has become so intense in the Bay Area that my sons advise against me trying to drive there. She commented that I might as well not go to San Francisco anymore because of its huge homeless problem. I agreed that it has intensified.

But then she made a comment that literally “blew me away.”

“I suppose all those people overrunning the border have caused quite a problem with homelessness.”

Quickly, I corrected her, saying that those people want only jobs and are not the ones camped everywhere. She was quite surprised which made me realize that people throughout much of the U. S. see no difference between our homeless and the illegals crossing the border — that few Latinos or Asians are part of the homeless population.

Will facts ever prevail again?
