Stockton man gets 135 years for sex crimes against girls

STOCKTON — A man who was convicted in December of numerous sex crimes against his own minor daughter and the daughter of his girlfriend was sentenced Monday in San Joaquin County Superior Court to 135 years to life in state prison, District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar announced in a statement.

The victims were 9 and 11 years old at the time the crimes were committed. They include oral copulation and lewd and lascivious acts, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

William Rene Valverde, 41, was arrested by the Stockton Police Department on Dec. 23, 2018, and charged at that time with more than four dozen sex acts involving minor children, according to jail records. He has remained in County Jail without access to bail since his arrest and will now be transferred to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

“Sexual crimes against children are the most reprehensible types of conduct that this office prosecutes. The emotional toll on the victims, t h e i r families and our prosecutors is p r o - found,” Ve r b e r Salazar said. “This defendant will never again harm a minor child and for that we can be grateful. We hope the survivors of his monstrous crimes and their families can find some measure of relief in the sentence imposed and will be able to work on the healing process,” the DA said.

For several months in 2010, Valverde repeatedly molested the 11- year- old daughter of his girlfriend, according to court records. The victim reported the molestation to the county’s Child Protective Services agency that same year.

In 2016 and 2017, Valverde continually molested his 9- year- old daughter until she came forward in 2018 to report the abuse, according to the DA’S statement.

During his trial, both young victims testified, establishing the fact that Valverde committed similar sexual conduct including the use of threats to coerce both girls into submission.

On Dec. 18, a Superior Court jury convicted Valverde on 10 separate counts. On Monday, Judge Richard Mallett sentenced Valverde to the following terms to run consecutively, adding up to more than 135 years to life in prison:

Three counts of oral copulation with a victim under 10 years old: 15 years to life on each count. Five counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old: 15 years to life on each count. Dissuading a witness by force or threat: four years. Lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 with force: 15 years. The case was successfully prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Theresa Stroud.

Representatives of both the DA’S Office and Stockton police said Monday they typically do not publicize sensitive cases involving crimes against minors by family members until after there is a conviction and sentencing. While both victims testified, their identities were protected during the public trial.
