Warriors sign 4 players after flurry of trade deadline moves

- By Wes Goldberg

NEW YORK — In the wake of a trade deadline that saw a half dozen of the Warriors’ players moved, they didn’t waste time in filling out the rest of their roster.

After deadline moves that sent D’Angelo Russell, Omari Spellman and Jacob Evans to Minnesota and Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III to Philadelphia, the Warriors briefly had just nine players on their 15-man roster.

On Thursday afternoon, the Warriors came to agreements with two-way contract players Ky Bowman and Marquese Chriss. Both will be converted to standard, 15-man contracts.

Rounding out the roster will be forward Juan Toscano-Anderson, signed to a rest-of-season contract, and guard Zach Norvell on a 10-day contract.

After going undrafted out of Marquette in 2015, Toscano-Anderson spent the last two years with the Warriors’ G League affiliate in Santa Cruz. In 31 games (12 starts) with Santa Cruz, he averaged 12.6 points 9.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals in 29 minutes per game.

The Warriors have been impressed with Toscano-Anderson, the 26-year-old Oakland native, since training camp. Now they will get a better look at him at the NBA level.

Undrafted out of Gonzaga last summer, Norvell is a 6-foot-5 lefty shooting guard who averaged 16 points per game and shot 39.4 percent from 3-point range for the Lakers’ G League affiliate.

By signing Norvell to a 10-day contract, the Warriors can get a first-hand look at the 22-year-old before making a decision on the 14th roster spot. If he impresses enough by the time his contract expires, they can sign him to a rest-of-season contract.

Chriss, who emerged as the team’s starting center after they traded Willie Cauley-Stein to the Mavericks two weeks ago, will continue to play that role.

Undrafted out of Boston College, Bowman was signed to a two-way contract that allowed for him to spend 45 days in the NBA. He played 37 games for Golden State and has spent the rest of the season with the team’s G League affiliate in Santa

Cruz.

Encouraged by his ball-handling, scoring and ability to defend full-court, the Warriors view him as a rotation player for the future.

With Chriss and Bowman now under contract, the Warriors’ new rotation is set. Bowman, Damion Lee, Jordan Poole and, for at least 10 days, Norvell at the guard positions.

Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, Eric Paschall and Toscano-Anderson will all get minutes at the forward spots while Chriss, Kevon Looney and Alen Smailagic round out the center rotation.

Per league rules, the Warriors still need to sign one more player by Feb. 20, two weeks after Thursday’s trades are finalized.
