Sherwood Mall closed Thursday after teen shot and killed there
STOCKTON — The San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office has identified 17-year-old Anthony Graves of Stockton as the person who was shot and killed at Sherwood Mall Wednesday night.
Graves was pronounced dead at the scene after police were called to the mall about 8:40 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Officers found both Graves and another victim with gunshot wounds. The other victim was transported to an area hospital and has not been identified.
Sherwood Mall also had signs posted Thursday saying it would be closed for the remainder of the day and apologizing for any inconvenience. Best Buy remained open, however, through an outside entrance.
Stockton Police Department spokesman Officer Joe Silva said Wednesday night that the shooting happened inside the mall and led to “chaos” as bystanders fled.
“The preliminary investigation is indicating there was some type of fight inside the mall at the eatery,” Silva said. “And that’s when gunshots were heard, and that’s when everybody came running out of the mall.”
The police did not have any suspect information to release as of Thursday afternoon, according to Silva.
Police had Macy’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and a restaurant blocked off Wednesday night, Christine Cowan said from the scene, where she said police activity was heavy. She said police were keeping onlookers away from the scene and were checking empty cars in the parking lot.
Sherwood Mall general manager Pat Dobson said he was called right after the shooting and went to the site.
“We’re working closely with the Stockton Police Department, assisting with their investigation in any way we can,” Dobson said.
