Kings center Holmes and teammates help families through coronavirus crisis

- By Jason Anderson

Kings center Richaun Holmes wanted to do something to help the community that embraced him so warmly before the coronavirus outbreak led to isolation orders and social distancing guidelines. He even asked a few of his friends to help.

The Kings announced Wednesday that Holmes is partnering with teammates De’Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes and Bogdan Bogdanovic to support local restaurants and donate more than 1,000 meals to families and children in need due to the pandemic. The group’s donation is part of the team’s “In This Together” campaign to support the community through the coronavirus crisis.

“Since coming to Sacramento, I have experienced firsthand how our community is truly one big family, so my teammates and I are committed to looking out for those in need and lending a helping hand,” Holmes said. “I am very thankful for my teammates in joining me to help bring smiles to others and get through this time together.”

Regional nonprofit organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Sacramento, Brother to Brother, City Year, JUMA Ventures, Mutual Assistance Network and Wellspring Women’s Center helped identify families and children in need. Buckhorn Grill, Chicago Fire, Fixins Soul Kitchen and Jimboy’s Tacos have agreed to prepare and deliver meals.

Holmes signed a two-year, $10 million freeagent deal with the Kings last summer. He quickly earned a spot in the starting lineup and a reputation as a fan favorite, averaging career highs of 12.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots in 39 games.
