How can you support worst president ever?

-

Editor: Military historian, author, and former Republican Max Boot has asked the question, “How can 42 percent of Americans still support the worst president in our history?” I would respond that part of the reason is the spread of disinformation by right wing media reporting. I would add that it is also the unwillingness of some Trump supporters to accept demonstrably provable facts. Scurrilous reports that Joe Biden suffers from dementia are clearly false. He has never supported “defunding the police,” or advocating Venezuelan “socialism” or banning fracking. What is even more alarming than the lies perpetrated by Trump and his team of enablers is the willingness of some Trump supporters to believe that he has done a good job as president. He has not. Although Trump cannot be blamed for the initial invasion of the coronavirus, he has not provided leadership necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19. Trump’s “leadership” has been dismal. He does not follow federal guidelines set up by his own health agencies. Dr. Fauci and other reputable physicians and scientists. The president mocks maskwearing and holds rallies where mask-wearing and social distancing are nowhere to be seen. Infections follow his rallies like lemmings. Where is Trump’s “beautiful” health plan that he promised? Rather than offering such a plan, Trump’s attorneys are now in court attempting to overturn the Affordable Care Act, which would deprive 20 million Americans of health insurance. Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy has put children in cages and separated children from their parents. He has kowtowed to dictators while insulting our allies. Trump was contemptuous of Senator John McCain because he was captured during the Vietnam War. McCain was tortured during his 5 years as a prisoner of war, and refused an early release, while Mr. Bone Spurs refers to those buried in military cemeteries as “suckers and losers.” Trump’s misogyny, racism, and xenophobia, while reviled by most Americans, are part of his appeal to some of his supporters. His bullying and name-calling are also attributes not respected by most Americans, but are supported by many of his followers. As Max Boot suggests, the good news is that 52 percent of Americans support Joe Biden. CYNTHIA NEELY Lodi
