49ers’ draft arsenal just grew to 10

Three compensatory draft picks initially came the 49ers’ way Wednesday, until the NFL corrected an error in its booking of diversity-hiring incentives.

Rather than give the 49ers a pair of thirdround picks for the departures of Robert Saleh (New York Jets coach) and Martin Mayhew (Washington general manager), only one such compensatory pick is allowed this year, with the others picks spread out so one comes in 2022 and another in ‘23.

The 49ers still own 10 draft picks, which would match their largest class since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch took charge in 2017.

The NFL’s compensatory process sent the 49ers a pair of third-round choices (Nos. 102 and 103 overall) and a fifth-round choice (No. 181 overall); a third-rounder came via the diversity-hiring incentive with former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh getting hired as the New York Jets coach.

They’ll also get third-round, compensatory picks in 2022 and ‘23 because of the Saleh exit as well as Washington’s hiring of general manager Martin Mayhew, a former 49ers vice president of player personnel.

The 49ers’ top picks are at No. 12 in the first round and No. 43 in the second. They then hold the third-rounder, a fourth-round pick, three in the fifth, a sixth and two seventh.

Factoring into their fifth-round compensatory pick were the free agency exits of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and tight end Levine Toilolo against the signing of guard Tom Compton.

Although the 49ers sent a third-round pick last year to Washington for left tackle Trent Williams, they acquired a fifth-rounder from New Orleans for linebacker Kwon Alexander and a seventhrounder from the Jets as part of the deal for defensive end Jordan Willis.

The 49ers have been very active traders during recent drafts, starting in 2017 when they moved down from No. 2 overall to No. 3 with the Chicago Bears. Last year, none of the 49ers’ five draft selections came at their original slot.
