ALICE SHEFFIELD

-

Alice Sheffield passed away peacefully on March 18, 2021 at the age of 99. She was born in Lawton, North Dakota on October 15, 1921 to Tjeerd and Altje Nienhuis. Alice was the fifth of eight children and grew up working with her two brothers and five sisters on the family farm. Working with and visiting family always brought her much joy.

Alice was a member of the Lodi Church of God, Seventh-Day. She remained true to her Christian training and was active in the Church through the years.

In 1946, after her parents retired from farming, they moved to Galt, CA. On December 7, 1947, Alice married Artie Sheffield. In 1952, Tjeerd and Altje decided to sell the Galt home and move to Lodi, CA. Alice and Artie were able to purchase the home and it is still owned by the family.

Alice enjoyed traveling and was able to visit many states over the years by attending church conferences and campmeetings. This also served as a time for minireunions as her siblings and their families would come from all over the country to attend these meetings. In 1989, Alice, her son Darrell, and her sister, Rose, traveled to Europe to visit their Mother’s families in Holland. Alice was the last surviving member of the first generation born in the United States from the Melle Nienhuis family who migrated to the United States from Holland in 1886.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Tjeerd and Altje Nienhuis; husband, Artie Sheffield; daughter, Rosalie; brothers, Matthew Nienhuis and Edward Nienhuis; sisters, Tena Gjesdal, Catherine Carlin, Rose Dais, Fencine Moldenhauer, and Fennie Schlenker.

She is survived by sons, Darrell Sheffield of Carmichael, CA; James (Sandra) Sheffield of Forest Ranch, CA; Richard (Susan) Sheffield of Lodi, CA; Jeffrey Sheffield of Lodi, CA; and Timothy (Kimberly) Sheffield of Lodi, CA; 12 grandchildren, 19 greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank Balance Assisted Living & Memory Care and American Hospice and Home Health Services for the care they provided to Alice, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother.

We are also thankful to Lodi Church of God, Seventh Day for all their prayers, faith, guidance, and support.

A private family graveside service will be held at Cherokee Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations or contributions may be made to the Lodi Church of God, Seventh Day, 2100 Tienda Drive, Lodi, CA 95242.
