Selling out our future
Editor: Sir Scruton wrote, “Societies endure only when they are devoted to future generations, and they collapse like the Roman Empire when the pleasures and fancies of the living usurp the inheritance of those unborn.”
JFK said it simpler: “We forget that the purpose of life is the future and not the present.”
We’re living in a time where our government has completely forgotten future generations with trillion dollar proposals with high-sounding titles selling out future generations in the belief it’s for our good when in reality it’s money to bail out states and cities who for decades have mismanaged and literally robbed their treasuries for themselves.
The $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill had only 9% going toward fighting the virus, the rest to bailing out state governments and paying off cronies. When Biden says ”My message to everyone struggling right now is this: Help is on the way,” my first thought is politicians who got us in this situation now think they’re the knights on white horses who will save us from politicians?
As Reagan said, ”The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”
From our beginnings our laws were intended to restrain government from threatening our God-given liberties but with the introduction of socialist beliefs contaminating our republic it has gradually undermined the values and virtues that made this nation the greatest in world history.
The tragedy of socialism is that it starts out making reason supreme but ends up destroying it. Caesar wrote, ”Republics need too much self-discipline and virtue,” two traits completely missing from this government.
Our Grecian Judeo-Christian virtues like independence, selfreliance, responsibility for one’s life, tolerance of the different and a healthy suspicion of power and authority seem to have evaporated into the belief that only government can save us when it’s the government that got us into this situation.
The traditions/institutions which made our character and morals are what socialism and its centralist government beliefs are destroying. Remember, socialism is the destruction of what our ancestors nurtured and bled for.
