Giants keep Tauchman in organization, expect more tough roster decisions soon
PHOENIX — It’s possible outfielder Mike Tauchman will have a chance to author another signature moment in a Giants uniform.
After being designated for assignment last week, Tauchman cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday. The transaction allows the Giants to keep Tauchman in the organization and gives the outfielder an opportunity to work on mechanical adjustments at the plate after he hit .181 with a .567 OPS in 166 atbats for the club this season.
Tauchman joins a crowded Triple-A outfield that also includes Jaylin Davis, who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday and optioned to Sacramento. Davis injured his hamstring on July 5 while running against the St. Louis Cardinals and missed nearly three weeks before beginning a rehab assignment with the Sacramento River Cats on July 25.
Since arriving at Triple-A, Davis is 2-for17, but both of the hits he’s recorded have been home runs.
Davis and Tauchman will compete for playing time with outfielders Braden Bishop, Bryce Johnson and Heliot Ramos. Bishop has major league experience in the Mariners organization and has been a key offensive catalyst for the River Cats this season while Ramos, the Giants’ top outfield prospect, recently joined the club after being promoted from Double-A Richmond.
With a crowded outfield, utility man Mauricio Dubón will likely receive most of his playing time at Triple-A on the infield while another versatile defender, Joe McCarthy, is expected to see most of his starts at first base.
