49ers’ Lance out of splint but not throwing

SANTA CLARA — Trey Lance’s right index finger was out of a splint but he still wasn’t seen throwing any footballs Monday. So, good news, not so good news?

Either way, Lance’s status remains cloude for his potential NFL debut on Sunday, when, if available, he’d likely only be used in a cameo role for a couple plays in place of the 49ers’ yet-to-benamed starter, Jimmy Garoppolo.

Lance chipped a bone in his finger in the preseason finale eight days ago against the Raiders. He did grip a ball in an early drill Monday but did not in later warmups, when he went through the motions of rollouts and fake throws.

Rotating immediately after Garoppolo on warmup throws was Nate Sudfeld, who is on the practice squad but could be activated for Sunday’s opener at Detroit as the No. 2 quarterback if Lance is not deemed ready to play.

Coach Kyle Shanahan is not scheduled to speak with the media after the short practice, which comes in the wake of the NFL’s mandatory three-day break for players.

Norman in, Johnson out — The 49ers confirmed signing Josh Norman to a one-year deal, a day after that the one-time Pro Bowler would be arriving for cornerback depth.

Norman wore No. 26 and warmed up early in Monday’s practice with veteran starting defensive backs Jason Verrett, Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt — the potential starting secondary.

Emmanuel Moseley’s status is in question. He figured to start with Verrett at cornerback, but Moseley worked on the side with a trainer, presumably because of a hamstring issue that recently hindered him.

To make room for Norman, Dontae Johnson was released after not practicing last week because of an abductor injury.

Attendance report — Wide receiver Jalen Hurd was not at practice, as has been the frequent case since camp opened six weeks ago, presumably because of his knee tendinitis.

Also absent for unknown reasons was defensive tackle Kevin Givens.

Returning to action was wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who rested a slight hamstring strain the previous 10 days. Aiyuk is an option to return punts but, considering his circumspect health, that double duty might be too much to ask.

Defensive ends Nick Bosa and Dee Ford practiced and look on target in their comebacks from last season’s knee and back injuries, respectively.

Numbers swap — Wide receiver Mohamed Sanu has gone from Nos. 18 to 6 in a swap with punter Mitch Wishnowsky.
