Durlynn Anema to sign new book
Local author Durlynn Anema will be signing her new book, “Camels Over the Sierra Nevada” at Tom’s Bookstore, 108 N. School St., on July 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In September of 1861, San Francisco businessmen thought that because camels could carry twice the loads of other pack animals and walk several miles further, could forage on desert plants no other animal would eat, and could go long periods without water, they would be ideal to travel the Big Trees Route on their way to Nevada. With these attributes, why did this idea fail?
Anema’s book answers this question while telling the fascinating story of how the camels arrived in California and how the men behind this visionary idea made it happen.
