DALLAS — The lawyer representing Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice said Thursday the NFL player told police he was driving one of the cars involved in Saturday’s multivehicle hit-and-run collision.

At a 16-minute news conference, Rice’s attorney State Sen. Royce West said he expects charges to be filed by Dallas police soon against the former Richland High School and SMU star. West said Rice was driving the Lamborghini in the collision, which injured at least four people and damaged multiple vehicles.

West said Rice has reached out to some of the victims in the crash and will “do everything in his power” to bring a sense of normalcy back to their lives. He said Rice understood that people could’ve been seriously injured, which is why he came forward and answered “every question” by police.

“He’s a young man that made a mistake,” West said, adding the 23-year-old has “never been involved in anything like this.”

West urged the public not to judge Rice based solely off the incident, and said people should get to know who he is first.

The news conference came one day after Rice announced in a written statement that he met with Dallas police and took “full responsibility” for his part in the six-vehicle crash at about 6:20 p.m. in the 6600 block of North Central Expressway. The Dallas Morning News broke the story Sunday that Dallas police were seeking to speak with Rice in connection with the collision.

Kristin Lowman, a Dallas police spokeswoman, has said a driver in a Chevrolet Corvette and a driver in a Lamborghini Urus were speeding in the far left lane, near University Boulevard, when both drivers lost control.
