Oklahoma State stays undefeated

Spencer Sanders passed for 235 yards and ran for 71 and a touchdown in his return from injury, and No. 6 Oklahoma State defeated No. 17 Iowa State 24-21 on Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.

Sanders had been out since injuring his right ankle in the season opener against Tulsa.

Chuba Hubbard ran for 139 yards and a touchdown for Oklahoma State (4-0, 3-0 Big 12). With the win, the Cowboys joined Kansas State as the only remaining undefeated teams in conference play.

The Cyclones (3-2, 3-1) vaulted onto the national radar by beating Oklahoma earlier in the month and were seeking their first 4-0 start in league play. Iowa State’s Breece Hall, who was second nationally in yards rushing per game, ran for a career-high 185 yards.

No. 2 Alabama 48, at Tennessee 17:

The Crimson Tide lost wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to a broken ankle on the opening kickoff.

That was about the only thing that didn’t go the Crimson Tide’s way.

Mac Jones threw for 387 yards and ran for a touchdown, and Najee Harris ran for three more touchdowns as Alabama (5-0 Southeaste­rn Conference) routed the Volunteers (2-3) for the 14th straight win in this rivalry.

Waddle rolled his right ankle as he was tackled on the opening kickoff and was taken by cart to the locker room.

Coach Nick Saban said Waddle has a similar injury to what Kenyan Drake had with a high ankle sprain with a fracture that probably will need surgery.

at No. 1 Clemson 47, Syracuse 21: Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes, Travis Etienne ran for three scores and the Tigers (6-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) shook off a sluggish performanc­e to win their 27th straight ACC game and put away the pesky Orange (1-5, 1-4).

No. 3 Notre Dame 45, at Pittsburgh 3: Ian Book passed for 312 yards and three touchdowns — two of them long catch-and-runs to graduate transfer Ben Skowronek — and the Fighting Irish (5-0, 4-0 ACC) overwhelme­d the reeling Panthers (3-4, 2-4).

at No. 11 Miami 19, Virginia 14: D’Eriq King threw for 322 yards and a touchdown, Mike Harley had career bests of 10 catches for 170 yards and the Hurricanes (5-1, 4-1 ACC) outlasted the Cavaliers (1-4, 1-4).

at No. 14 North Carolina 48, No. 23 North Carolina State 21:

Javonte Williams ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns to help the Tar Heels (4-1, 4-1 ACC) beat the Wolfpack (4-2, 4-2) in the renewal of the longtime state rivalry.

at Wake Forest 23, No. 19 Virginia Tech 16:

Walk-on freshman safety Nick Anderson had three intercepti­ons, Christian Beal-Smith ran for 129 yards and Nick Sciba kicked three field goals to help the Demon Deacons (3-2, 2-2 ACC) beat the Hokies (3-2, 3-2).

Phillip Brooks returned a pair of punts for touchdowns, the Wildcats (4-1, 4-0 Big 12) took advantage of an embarrassi­ng day of special teams by their biggest rival, and Kansas State rolled past the Jayhawks (0-5, 0-4).

at No. 22 Marshall 20, Florida Atlantic 9: Brenden Knox rushed for 101 yards and caught one of redshirt freshman Grant Wells’ two touchdown passes to lead the Thundering Herd (5-0, 3-0 Conference USA) over the pandemic-depleted Owls (1-1, 1-1).

at No. 25 Coastal Carolina 28, Georgia Southern 14:

Backup quarterbac­k Fred Payton threw three touchdown passes and the Chanticlee­rs (5-0, 3-0 Sun Belt) won their first game as a ranked team with a victory over the Eagles (3-2, 1-2).

at Missouri 20, Kentucky 10: Larry Rountree carried 37 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Tigers (2-2 SEC) to a grinding victory over the Wildcats (2-3).

Oklahoma 33, at Texas Christian 14: Spencer Rattler threw for 332 yards and two touchdowns, and the Sooners (3-2, 2-2 Big 12) won consecutiv­e games for the first time this season, beating the Horned Frogs (1-3, 1-3).

Auburn 35, at Mississipp­i 28: Quarterbac­k Bo Nix directed two fourthquar­ter touchdown drives, capped by a 42-yard touchdown pass to Seth Williams with 1:11 left, to lift the Tigers (3-2 SEC) to a comeback win over the Rebels (1-4).

at Texas 27, Baylor 16:

Sam Ehlinger passed for an early touchdown, then ran for two more in the second half to lead the Longhorns (3-2, 2-2) to a win over the Bears (1-2, 1-2) that snapped Texas’ two-game losing skid.

at Texas Tech 34, West Virginia 27: Cornerback Zech McPhearson returned a fumble 56 yards for a touchdown with 8:44 left to lift the Red Raiders (2-3, 1-3 Big 12) to a victory over the Mountainee­rs (3-2, 2-2).

at Louisiana State 52, South Carolina 24: Tigers freshman TJ Finley passed for 265 yards and two touchdowns in his college debut, Trey Palmer scored on a 95yard, sideline-to-sideline kickoff return and LSU (2-2 SEC) defeated the Gamecocks (2-3).

at Boston College 48, Georgia Tech 27: Phil Jurkovec threw for 145 yards and two Eagles touchdowns, adding 94 yards on the ground as Boston College ( 4-2, 3-2 ACC) greeted the Yellow Jackets (2-4, 3-2) by scoring on its first seven full possession­s.

at Louisville 48, Florida State 16: Javian Hawkins ran for a season-best 174 yards and a career-high three touchdowns for the Cardinals (2-4, 1-4 ACC), who snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Seminoles (2-4, 1-4).

Hawaii 34, at Fresno State 19: Chevan Cordeiro and Calvin Turner each scored twice as the Rainbow Warriors beat the Bulldogs in the Mountain West Conference and season openers for both teams.

at Boise State 42, Utah State 13:

Hank Bachmeier threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns, George Holani rushed for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the Broncos defeated the Aggies in the season opener for both teams.
