Woman marks a football f irst

-

Sarah Fuller of Vanderbilt is the first woman to play in a Power Five college game.

Sarah Fuller made history, but her barrier-breaking kickoff was the only highlight for Vanderbilt as Missouri dominated the Commodores 41-0 on Saturday.

Fuller became the first woman to participate in a Power Five conference football game when she kicked off to start the second half. Fuller delivered a low kick that bounced to the 35-yard line, where Missouri pounced on it. She never got the chance to attempt an extra point or field goal, as the Tigers (4-3) rarely allowed the Commodores (0-8) to cross midfield.

“I just think it’s incredible I am able to do this, and all I want to do is be a good influence to the young girls out there,” Fuller said.

Buffalo back ties TD mark

Jaret Patterson ran for eight touchdowns to tie an FBS record and became the fourth major-college football player to have a 400-yard rushing game as host Buffalo beat Kent State 70-41 on Saturday.

Patterson matched the single-game rushing touchdown mark set by Illinois running back Howard Griffith on Sept. 22, 1990, against Southern Illinois. Kalen Ballage of Arizona State is the only other player to score eight touchdowns in a major college game, getting seven rushing and one receiving in 2016 against Texas Tech.

Against Kent State, Patterson had 36 carries and touchdowns of 3, 31, 42, 49, 1, 7, 11 and 58 yards.

Coastal Carolina still unbeaten

C.J. Marable ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns and No. 20 Coastal Carolina wrapped up the Sun Belt Conference East Division title with a 49-14 victory over Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.

The Chanticleers (9-0, 7-0) had 572 yards of offense in extending their winning streak to 10 games. They moved up to the Football Bowl Subdivision three seasons ago.

Texas State (2-10, 2-6) closed its sixth straight losing season. It was the secondmost points the Bobcats have allowed in regulation this season.

Texas State held a moment of silence for sophomore defensive back Khambrail Winters, who was fatally shot Tuesday in what the San Marcos Police Department said was a drug deal gone wrong.

Outbreak puts Ohio State season in jeopardy

Ohio State officials said they are unsure when the team can practice again, let alone play next week at Michigan State, after an outbreak of COVID-19 put the fourth-ranked Buckeyes’ Big Ten title hopes in danger.

“I have no clue what this afternoon or tomorrow will bring or next week will bring,” said athletic director Gene Smith, whose team had to call off Saturday’s game with Illinois on Friday night.

Three more college football games across the country were canceled or postponed Saturday, including Florida State hosting Virginia.

In the Mountain West, San Jose State at Boise State was also canceled Saturday morning as was Texas El Paso at Rice shortly before the scheduled kickoff between the Conference USA teams.
