Oregon St. hands Utah first conference loss
Luke Musgrave blocked and returned a punt for a touchdown, B.J. Baylor rushed for over 100 yards and a score, and Oregon State rallied from an early deficit to defeat Utah 42-34 on Saturday night in Corvallis, Ore.
The Beavers (5-2 overall, 3-1 Pac-12 conference) trailed at the half but scored touchdowns on their first three possessions of the second half to take control.
Utah (4-3, 3-1) led in time of possession but missed a fieldgoal attempt and was stopped twice on fourth down from the two-yard line.
Oregon State, the conference leader in yards rushing per game, had 260 yards with Baylor, who entered averaging 112.8 yards, getting 152.
Quarterback Chance Nolan was 14-for-19 passing for 208 yards and two touchdowns with Trevon Bradford catching six passes for 74 yards and a score. Bradford also had two carries for 20 yards and a score.
Alex Austin broke up a fourth-down pass with 6:22 to play to give the Beavers possession with a 10-point lead. On third down, Nolan hit Tre-Shaun Harrison for 54 yards to get the Beavers out of a hole and help run time off the clock.
Brigham Young 21, at Washington State 19: Tyler Allgeier ran for 191 yards and two touchdowns and the Cougars (6-2) held on to beat the Cougars (4-4), who played their first game since head coach Nick Rolovich was fired for refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccination.
Rolovich and four assistants were fired Monday for not complying with the governor’s mandate that all state employees be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Rolovich had requested a religious exemption that was denied Monday.
He was replaced for the rest of the season by Jake Dickert, the team’s defensive coordinator who is acting head coach.
at California 26, Colorado 3:
Chase Garbers passed for two touchdowns and broke the school record for career rushing yards by a quarterback, leading the Golden Bears (2-5, 1-3) over the Buffaloes (2-5, 1-3). Garbers passed for 225 yards but did his most damage on the ground, rushing for 96 yards in 10 carries. That moved him past Joe Kapp as Cal’s all-time leader for quarterbacks with 1,025 yards. Kapp ran for 931 in 1956 to 1958.
