Deputies shoot driver after car chase in Santa Clarita

DUI suspect tried to run over officers with vehicle, officials say.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a man suspected of driving under the influence Friday night when he allegedly tried to run them over after a car chase that ended near Santa Clarita, authorities said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment, said Deputy Shawn Du Busky, a department spokesman. He was stable, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s deputies in Santa Clarita began pursuing the man, who was suspected of driving under the influence, on the 14 Freeway near Newhall Avenue shortly after 7 p.m., the Sheriff ’s Department said in a news release.

They continued to chase him as he exited the freeway and drove through residential streets, according to the release.

Deputies ended the pursuit, and a Sheriff ’s Department aircraft monitored the man.

He entered an RV park by ramming the front gate, then got out of his vehicle and into a different vehicle, the department said.

As deputies arrived in the 10600 block of Soledad Canyon Road, the man allegedly tried to run them over, and one or more of them fired their weapons, the department said.

The man then sped away from the RV park and crashed the vehicle a short distance away, the Sheriff ’s Department said. Deputies detained him as he tried to flee the scene, according to authorities.

The man, who had been shot in the upper body, was hospitalized and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and evading arrest, the Sheriff’s Department said.

No deputies were injured, according to the department.
