November 6, 1924 - March 30, 2022

Richard Charles Wayne passed away peacefully at home on March 30, 2022 at the age of 97. Born in Geneva, NY, Dick was raised in Newark, NJ with his younger brother, Newton. He was an Ohio State Buckeye prior to attending the US Merchant Marine Academy. Commissioned in 1944 as a deck officer, and subsequently as a lieutenant in the US Navy, Dick traveled the world on active duty as a mate and navigator. In 1947, he returned to his favorite port city, Los Angeles, and made it his home. Not long thereafter, Dick was introduced to his future wife Lenore, an artist who shared his passion for opera. Inseparable from the time they met, Dick and Lenore spent 63 wonderful years together until Lenore’s passing on September 8, 2013. Following a gratifying 52-year career at Merrill Lynch, Dick dedicated his later years to philanthropy, patronizing many cultural institutions in Los Angeles. From contributing to LACMA’s art collection to sponsoring young singers through the Opera Buffs and LA Opera, Dick and Lenore were committed to preserving and supporting the arts for the enjoyment of future generations. Ever curious about the world, Dick was an avid reader of daily newspapers and mystery novels. He enjoyed the adventure of trying new cuisines and the challenge of a good chess game. A dedicated Dodgers fan, he watched every game to the final out, often with his beloved caregiver friends, Nila and Roque. In all he did, Dick lived life to the fullest and inspired all who knew him with his unflagging optimism and belief in every person’s unique potential. Richard is survived by his son, Ian Wayne (Angela), his granddaughters, Charlotte Wayne and Audrey Riccio (Max), his great-granddaughter, Poppy, and the many friends who knew and loved him.
