President to undergo surgery

Doctors plan to operate on Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to remove blood that has collected outside her brain, the apparent result of a fall she took in August.

Fernandez, 60, was admitted to a Buenos Aires hospital after complaining about a “tingling” sensation in her left arm and after experts determined a “slight loss of muscle strength” in the limb, according to a statement released by the Favaloro Foundation hospital.

Before the latest symptoms, Fernandez had complained of headaches. Doctors discovered that she had a subdural hematoma, a collection of blood between the tissues around the brain, apparently the result of an Aug. 12 fall.

New indictment in rape scandal

A grand jury investigation stemming from the rape of a 16-year-old girl by two Steubenville high school football players has led to an indictment against a school information technology employee.

The indictment announced by state Atty. Gen. Mike DeWine charges William Rhinaman of Mingo Junction with tampering with evidence, obstructing justice, obstructing official business and perjury.

DeWine said the charges were related to Rhinaman’s job as a Steubenville city schools employee. He said the grand jury investigation was continuing.

The football players were convicted in March of raping the West Virginia girl after an alcohol-fueled party in August 2012.

Three soldiers held in slaying

Three soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord have been arrested in the stabbing death of another soldier

Police initially said the slain man, 20-year-old Tevin Geike, who was white, had been killed in what was being investigated as a racially motivated attack by five black men. But on Monday, police said in a statement, “It appears from interviewing everyone involved that race was not a motivating factor in this homicide.”

The three soldiers were booked into Pierce County jail, the Lakewood Police Department said. They were identified as Jeremiah Hill, 23, Cedarium Johnson, 21, and Ajoni Runnion-Bareford, 21, all assigned to a combat infantry unit.

The victim was also an active-duty Lewis-McChord soldier, assigned to a combat aviation unit, officials said.

“The main suspect, Jere- miah Hill, did not make a statement, so it’s unknown exactly why he did this,” police said.

‘Wall of people’ taken from hull

Deep-sea divers “unpacked a wall of people” from the hull of a smuggler’s trawler on the sea floor near Lampedusa, gingerly untangling the dead would-be immigrants in the latest and most painstaking phase of a recovery operation after the ship’s fiery capsizing.

It was the first time the divers had been able to reach the hull, and authorities said 38 more bodies were recovered, raising the death toll from last week’s tragedy to 232. Scores of others are believed missing; most, if not all, were Eritreans trying to reach Europe in search of asylum and a better life.

Just 155 migrants survived the shipwreck. Survivors have said at least 500 people were aboard.
