Scientists link smog to Asia
California researchers say 10% of the Central Valley’s smog is coming from as far as 6,000 miles away, in Asia.
UC Davis atmospheric scientist Ian Faloona presented preliminary results of three years of air-sampling at an air quality conference Tuesday near Yosemite National Park.
Researchers sampled pollutants from a plane and from a mountain near California’s Point Sur.
The university says researchers were able to identify characteristics of the particles to link them to their origins.
Faloona says the research isn’t about assigning blame.
He says it’s about realizing that local air pollution is a global issue.
California’s San Joaquin Valley has some of the most polluted air in the state.
