“Face the Nation” moderator and CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer said he will retire this summer after 46 years at the network.

Schieffer announced his decision Wednesday night at the Texas Christian University’s Schieffer College of Communications, which is named after him.

Schieffer joined CBS News in 1969 and covered the Pentagon, the White House, Congress and the State Department. He anchored the Saturday edition of the “CBS Evening News” from 1973 to 1996. In 1991, he took over as moderator of “Face the Nation.”

Schieffer also stepped in to anchor the weeknight edition of “The CBS Evening News” when Dan Rather was pushed out in 2005. Schieffer held the anchor chair for a year before the arrival of Katie Couric.
