Frank Kaminsky of national runner-up Wisconsin and Breanna Stewart of three-time national champion Connecticu­t won the John R. Wooden Awards as national college basketball players of the year. They received their trophies Friday night during the first College Basketball Awards at the Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles.

Greg Wooden , a grandson of the late UCLA coach, announced Kaminsky’s name. The senior center finished ahead of Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor and Kentucky junior Willie Cauley-Stein . Stewart accepted the women’s trophy from retired UCLA star and Wooden family friend Ann Meyers Drysdale . Agnieszka Radwanska reached the semifinals of the Katowice Open in her native Poland, beating Klara Koukalova , 6-1, 6-1.

UCLA’s baseball team, ranked sixth in the nation, beat No. 8 USC, 9-3, in the opener of a three-game series at USC’s Dedeaux Field. Ty Moore and Christoph Bono hit threerun home runs for the Bruins.

The New Orleans Saints signed former Dallas linebacker and defensive end Anthony Spencer to a oneyear contract. . . . The NFL suspended New York Giants linebacker Victor Butler for the first four games of next season for violating its policy on performanc­e enhancing substances.

Lauren Hill , the 19-year-old basketball player who became an inspiratio­n and made national headlines by playing for Mount St. Joseph College after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, died Friday morning. (Story, B6)

Former Florida football coach and athletic director Ray Graves , who helped the Gators reach national prominence in the 1960s, died at 96, the school said. Former Florida and current South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier won the 1966 Heisman Trophy when Graves coached the team.

William J. Morey Jr. , a thoroughbr­ed trainer who won over 1,300 races mostly on the Northern California circuit, died of cancer at 74.
