Arizona 4, Dodgers 3 (10 innings)

- — Dylan Hernandez

KEY MOMENT: With the game tied, 3-3, the Dodgers called on left-hander J.P. Howell to pitch the 10th inning. Howell, who pitched in 68 games last season and faded in the postseason, issued two one-out walks. When Cliff Pennington stole third base, the Dodgers moved to a five-man infield that included Yasiel Puig. Of the outfielders who were in the game, Puig looked like the most competent infielder in spring-training workouts, Mattingly said. “Actually, his hands are pretty good,” Mattingly said. It didn’t matter. Pennington scored the walk-off run on a single by Ender Inciarte.

ON THE MOUND: Rookie Yimi Garcia pitched two scoreless innings in relief of starting pitcher Brett Anderson. Veteran right-hander Joel Peralta pitched a scoreless ninth inning to send the game into extra innings.

AT THE PLATE: Yasmani Grandal’s first hit for the Dodgers was a home run, a towering solo shot to right-center field in the fourth inning that reduced his team’s deficit to 3-1. Jimmy Rollins tied the game an inning later, when he drove in two runs on a double to right-center field. The Dodgers had a chance to score a go-ahead run in the ninth inning, when Andre Ethier came to the plate with two outs and two runners. Ethier, who was celebrating his 33rd birthday, grounded out to first base.

ROSTER CONFUSION: Ryan Webb wasn’t with the Dodgers on Friday for their series opener against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. In fact, the recently acquired right-hander isn’t expected to be with the Dodgers for the entire three-game series. As for why Webb isn’t here or when he might join the Dodgers, that remains a mystery. “I don’t know,” Mattingly said. The Dodgers confirmed Webb is on the 40-man roster, but otherwise provided no information about the reliever they acquired the previous day in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles.

ON THE FARM: Teenage left-hander Julio Urias pitched five scoreless innings in his debut for double-A Tulsa. Urias, 18, was charged with two hits. He struck out four and walked one. Urias also singled in his only at-bat. Top prospect Corey Seager played shortstop for Tulsa and was hitless in four at-bats.

UP NEXT: Clayton Kershaw (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will face the Diamondbacks and Archie Bradley (major league debut) at Chase Field at 5 p.m. On the air: TV: Sports Net LA. Radio: 570, 1020.
