It’s so, so not the Academy Awards
Host Amy Schumer spells it out in a show with cat suits, musical mashups and more.
For those who might not understand how the MTV Movie Awards were not the Oscars, host Amy Schumer spelled it out Sunday night.
“This is the only show,” she said, “where the best movies are voted on by the people who keep ‘Catfish’ and ‘Teen Mom’ on the air.”
By the end of the twohour show at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live, Shailene Woodley had rivaled Schumer for the biggest presence onstage, winning something called the trailblazer award as well as best female performance, best kiss (with her “Fault in Our Stars” castmate Ansel Elgort) and movie of the year.
Yes, this is the awards show where “The Fault in Our Stars” beats “Selma” and “Boyhood” for movie of the year.
Schumer peppered the night with naughty pretaped bits including one about women flocking to the movie theater to see “Fifty Shades of Grey” and the forthcoming male-stripper sequel “Magic Mike XXL.” After scoring some early laughs, though, some of Schumer’s humor — and appearances by the likes of the “Magic Mike XXL” cast — seemed to fall flat with the Nokia crowd.
Better received were the musical performances, including the rock and hiphop mashup of Fall Out Boy paired with rapper Fetty Wap, whose offered a guitar-and drum-infused version of “Trap Queen.”
Charli XCX, joined by Tinashe and Ty Dolla Sign, performed “Drop That Kitty” as dancers in pink cat suits pranced around. The crowd seemed at once entertained and dumbfounded by the spectacle.
Some of the better moments came in the second half of the show. Not only did the Barden Bellas of “Pitch Perfect 2” premiere a clip — in keeping with the MTV Movie Awards tradition of previewing summer’s coming attractions — but Jimmy Kimmel also gave a muchneeded boost of funny presenting the comedic genius award to Kevin Hart.
“They said he was too small to be a comedic giant,” Kimmel said. “They called him names like Eddie Smurphy ... Cedric the Entertiny. He scored his first big role playing Rudy on ‘The Cosby Show.’ ”
For the record, “Neighbors” actors Zac Efron and Dave Franco won for best duo and Jennifer Lopez won for best performance by an actress pretending to be scared. Bradley Cooper won best male performance — and delivered a sober acceptance speech about the slain veteran at the center of “American Sniper.”
On a lighter note, cast members of the forthcoming “Avengers: Age of Ultron” assembled onstage to present Robert Downey Jr. the generation award, MTV’s version of a lifetime achievement award.
Downey took the stage to give his words of wisdom to the youth looking on: “Dream big. Work hard. Keep your nose clean.”
In a show that lacked any real fireworks, Schumer ended the night with perhaps the frankest outro one could expect. She told the audience to check out her f ilm “Trainwreck” this summer and bid the crowd adieu as confetti cannons went off.
