U.N. team attacked; two killed

-

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Mali says two assailants attacked a U.N. convoy of civilian workers in the country’s north, killing two.

The U.N. mission said the gunmen stopped the convoy and fatally shot the drivers before setting the vehicles on fire. Mission officials said another team member was wounded, but escaped with others after the attack about nine miles west of the city of Gao.

The ambush came just three days after an attack on the U.N. peacekeeping base in the same region in which three people were killed and 16 wounded. A group formed by Algerian Islamic extremist leader Moktar Belmoktar claimed responsibility for that attack, according to SITE Intelligence Group.
