BAUGH, James Webb

April 16, 1941 - April 2, 2015

James Webb Baugh, who taught and counseled in Orange County community colleges for more than 30 years, has died at the age of 73.

Jim was born in 1941 and received his early education in Birmingham, Alabama where he was born and grew up. He graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and then attended graduate school at the University of Southern California where he studied counseling and theater.

After teaching high school for a short while in Arlington Heights, IL, Jim moved to southern California where he began his more than 30 year tenure in the Coast Community College District. He first taught English and then remedial reading at Golden West College in Huntington Beach. He then moved on to Coastline Community College in Fountain Valley where he taught in the travel program for many years. He spent his last several years counseling students at Coastline. To say that Jim was a conscientious and dedicated teacher would be an understatement. He spent countless hours preparing for each class, and after his evening classes typically turned off the last light on campus.

Jim loved and lived life to the fullest. His passions were many, but none more than travel and the arts. He spent pretty much all of his vacation time traveling, often not returning home until late in the evening on the night before he was to return to class. Jim circumnavigated the globe more than once. He traveled to many common tourist destinations in Europe, the Americas and Asia, but also went to more exotic locations such as Easter Island, Mongolia, Tibet and Nepal. He went on countless hiking trips in Switzerland and England, and in some years seemed to spend more days on cruise ships than at home.

Jim loved all of the arts…theater, music, the decorative arts, etc. He subscribed to many theaters both in Los Angeles and Orange County… the Ahmanson, Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Repertory and the Laguna Playhouse, to mention just a few. He subscribed to the Los Angeles Philharmonic for more than 40 years, and also to the Pacific Symphony for most of its existence. Jim could spend days looking at art in galleries, and he bought far more art than he could possibly display at the home he shared with his partner Marvin, in Cowan Heights.

Jim will be fondly remembered and missed by past students and colleagues, and by many friends, but none more than his long time friends Joseph Lambert and Harold Schleifer of Irvine and Virginia Van der Veer of Tucson, AZ, and by his surviving partner of more than 50 years, Marvin Lee Tuttle of Santa Ana, and his sister Fay Baugh Eubank of Hixson, TN.

A memorial fund honoring Jim’s memory has been established at the City of Hope to support the prostate cancer research of his doctor Przemyslaw Twardowski. Donations may be sent to the City of Hope, Attn: Rick Leonard, 1500 E. Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010. Please indicate “James W. Baugh” on your check.
