U.S. sprinters stripped of 2012 Olympic medal

The entire U.S. men’s sprint relay team was stripped of its silver medal from the 2012 London Olympics on Wednesday as a result of Tyson Gay’s doping case, two officials with knowledge of the decision told the Associated Press.

The North Carolina basketball family has lost a second beloved coach in the last few months with the death of Bill Guthridge, Dean Smith’s “perfect sidekick.”

Guthridge, who was Smith’s longtime assistant and later succeeded him as North Carolina’s head coach, was 77. The school said Guthridge died Tuesday night of heart failure.

Slovakia’s Peter Sagan surged in the short final uphill sprint to win the windy fourth stage of the Tour of California and close in on overall leader Tom Skujins of Latvia. Friday’s time trials have been moved to Santa Clarita because of weather concerns.

Andy Murray improved his record on clay this year to 10-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jeremy Chardy at the Italian Open in Rome.

Rafael Nadal was sharp in a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Turkish qualifier Marsel Ilhan, and Roger Federer began his pursuit of an elusive crown with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Pablo Cuevas.

In women’s play, Victoria Azarenka eliminated fifth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, 6-2, 7-6 (2); and sixth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard got a 6-3, 6-4 win over Zarina Diyas.

Venus Williams beat Elina Svitolina, 6-4, 6-3.

UCLA and USC will play roundof-16 NCAA men’s tennis playoff matches in Waco, Texas, on Thursday. UCLA (17-9) will take on top-seeded Oklahoma (26-2) at 7 a.m. PDT. USC (24-4) meets Duke (24-6) at 5 p.m.
