Shutout big­gest up­set of sea­son

Yu­caipa pulled off the big­gest up­set of the high school soft­ball sea­son Fri­day, knock­ing off the na­tion’s No. 1 team, Mission Viejo, 1-0, in the South­ern Sec­tion Di­vi­sion 2 cham­pi­onship game at Bill Bar­ber Park in Irvine.

Mission Viejo (30-1) had beaten Yu­caipa (31-3) twice this sea­son, 1-0 and 3-2. Ari­zon­abound pitcher Tay­lor McQuillin had earned 103 vic­to­ries in her ca­reer, a South­ern Sec­tion record. But Ne­vada-bound pitcher Brooke Bolinger of Yu­caipa was up for the chal­lenge and threw the shutout. She had to get Alyssa Palomino out with the po­ten­tial ty­ing run on sec­ond in the sev­enth.

Jor­dan Green drove in Megan Martin for the game’s only run in the fifth in­ning.

In Di­vi­sion 3, Whit­tier La Serna ral­lied for a 5-4 win over Grand Ter­rance on a walk-off sin­gle by Mel Madri­gal in the sev­enth.

Do­minic Me­jia had a two-run sin­gle in the fourth. La Serna scored two runs in the sev­enth to over­come a 4-3 deficit.

In Di­vi­sion 7, Rolling Hills Prep de­feated the Academy of Ca­reers and Ex­plo­ration, 10-0. Isabella Ber­outy threw a per­fect game with 11 strike­outs and hit a two-run home run.

Four more cham­pi­onships will be held on Satur­day in Irvine: Sa­vanna vs. Par­a­clete, Di­vi­sion 6 at 10 a.m.; St. Bon­aven­ture vs. Gar­den Grove, Di­vi­sion 5 at 12:30 p.m.; High­land vs. Tor­rance, Di­vi­sion 4 at 3:30 p.m., and Norco vs. West Ranch, Di­vi­sion 1 at 6 p.m.
