Shutout biggest upset of season
Yucaipa pulled off the biggest upset of the high school softball season Friday, knocking off the nation’s No. 1 team, Mission Viejo, 1-0, in the Southern Section Division 2 championship game at Bill Barber Park in Irvine.
Mission Viejo (30-1) had beaten Yucaipa (31-3) twice this season, 1-0 and 3-2. Arizonabound pitcher Taylor McQuillin had earned 103 victories in her career, a Southern Section record. But Nevada-bound pitcher Brooke Bolinger of Yucaipa was up for the challenge and threw the shutout. She had to get Alyssa Palomino out with the potential tying run on second in the seventh.
Jordan Green drove in Megan Martin for the game’s only run in the fifth inning.
In Division 3, Whittier La Serna rallied for a 5-4 win over Grand Terrance on a walk-off single by Mel Madrigal in the seventh.
Dominic Mejia had a two-run single in the fourth. La Serna scored two runs in the seventh to overcome a 4-3 deficit.
In Division 7, Rolling Hills Prep defeated the Academy of Careers and Exploration, 10-0. Isabella Berouty threw a perfect game with 11 strikeouts and hit a two-run home run.
Four more championships will be held on Saturday in Irvine: Savanna vs. Paraclete, Division 6 at 10 a.m.; St. Bonaventure vs. Garden Grove, Division 5 at 12:30 p.m.; Highland vs. Torrance, Division 4 at 3:30 p.m., and Norco vs. West Ranch, Division 1 at 6 p.m.
