Scoreless over 12 innings, Torrance wins, 1-0, in 13th

It was a remarkable Southern Section Division 4 championsh­ip softball game on Saturday night at Bill Barber Park in Irvine.

Through 12 innings, Palmdale Highland and Torrance were scoreless. Rachel Garcia, the Gatorade state player of the year headed to UCLA, struck out 24 batters for Highland.

Marissa Moreno of Torrance struck out 13 in 13 shutout innings for Torrance.

In the bottom of the 13th inning, Garcia injured her knee during warmups and had to come out. Torrance got a walk-off single from Britny Jumalon to defeat Highland, 1-0.

Garcia had come in with statistics hard to duplicate. She had struck out 394 batters in 163 innings, thrown10 no-hitters, five perfect games and 20 shutouts.

But Moreno kept matching Garcia pitch for pitch.

Division 5

Ventura St. Bonaventur­e defeated Garden Grove, 8-0, behind Long Beach Statebound Cielo Meza, who struck out eight and threw a three-hitter. Angelina Flores had a two-run double to get the Seraphs rolling.

Division 6

Lancaster Paraclete gave Coach Margaret Neill her first title with a 9-2 victory over Anaheim Savanna. Neill has been the coach since1981.

Rylee Maston hit a tworun home run, a two-run double and had three hits. Jenny Littlejohn added three hits. Kailla Searcy picked up the pitching victory.
