A ‘Bright Star’ in D.C.

- — David Ng

“Bright Star,” the musical from Steve Martin and Edie Brickell that debuted in September at the Old Globe in San Diego, will play at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington in December before a Broadway opening in spring, organizers said Tuesday.

The bluegrass-themed production features music by Martin and Brickell and a book by Martin. The actor doesn’t appear in the show, a love story in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina set during two parts of the 20th century.

“Bright Star” marks Martin’s first foray into writing a major stage musical. The actor has written screenplays for films that include “Roxanne” and “L.A. Story.” Martin and Brickell won a Grammy Award last year for the song “Love Has Come for You” from the album of the same name.
