A ‘Bright Star’ in D.C.

“Bright Star,” the mu­si­cal from Steve Martin and Edie Brick­ell that de­buted in Septem­ber at the Old Globe in San Diego, will play at the John F. Kennedy Cen­ter for the Per­form­ing Arts in Washington in De­cem­ber be­fore a Broad­way open­ing in spring, or­ga­niz­ers said Tues­day.

The blue­grass-themed pro­duc­tion fea­tures mu­sic by Martin and Brick­ell and a book by Martin. The ac­tor doesn’t ap­pear in the show, a love story in the Blue Ridge Moun­tains of North Carolina set dur­ing two parts of the 20th cen­tury.

“Bright Star” marks Martin’s first foray into writ­ing a ma­jor stage mu­si­cal. The ac­tor has writ­ten screen­plays for films that in­clude “Rox­anne” and “L.A. Story.” Martin and Brick­ell won a Grammy Award last year for the song “Love Has Come for You” from the al­bum of the same name.
