Arizona 3, Angels 2

Los Angeles Times - - SPORTS - — Mike DiGiovanna

AT THE PLATE: Matt Joyce, who entered with a .181 average, reached on a shift-beating single to the left side of the infield to lead off the fifth inning, took third on Johnny Giavotella’s single to right and scored the Angels’ first run on Chris Iannetta’s double-play grounder. The Angels scored their second run in the sixth when Kole Calhoun singled to right-center, Mike Trout doubled to right and Calhoun scored on Albert Pujols’ groundout to shortstop. David Freese flied to center, moving Trout to third, and Joyce walked, but Giavotella lined out to third to end the inning. Joyce tripled to center with two outs in the eighth but was stranded when Giavotella struck out on a nasty Daniel Hudson changeup. Iannetta opened the ninth with a single, but pinch-hitter Kyle Kubitza grounded into a double play and Erick Aybar grounded out to end the game.

ON THE MOUND: Hector Santiago struck out a season-high nine, including the middle of the Arizona order — Paul Goldschmidt, Yasmany Tomas and Aaron Hill — in the fifth. But the left-hander, who gave up three runs and seven hits in a five-inning start, paid the price for two misplaced cut fastballs, one that Goldschmidt drove over the right-field wall for his 19th homer, a solo shot in the first, and one that Welington Castillo lined over the left-field wall in the fourth for a solo homer. The Diamondbacks also scored in the third when David Peralta led off with a single and Tomas hit an RBI triple to right-center.

IN THE FIELD: Goldschmidt, the Arizona first baseman, robbed Joyce of a hit with a diving stop of a hard grounder down the line in the second and made a lunging stop of Freese’s shot down the line with runners on first and third to end the fourth. Shortstop Nick Ahmed made a diving backhand stop of Pujols’ RBI groundout in the sixth, got up and made a long, one-hop throw to first for the out. Pujols made a backhand, diving catch of A.J. Pollock’s liner in the seventh.

REHAB REPORT: Collin Cowgill, on the disabled list since May 26, has had three cortisone injections in his sprained right wrist, but the reserve outfielder is confident that the last one, administered Tuesday, was pinpointed well enough to provide maximum relief. Cowgill, who underwent surgery on the wrist in 2009, will rest for a week and hopes to resume baseball activities next week. Reliever Mike Morin (left rib-cage strain) could begin a minor league rehabilitation stint next week.

UP NEXT: Left-hander C.J. Wilson (4-5, 3.60 ERA) will oppose Arizona right-hander Allen Webster (1-0, 3.18) at Chase Field on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. TV: FS West; Radio: 830.
