2 charged with smuggling people

-

Two men have been charged with immigrant smuggling after a boat they allegedly guided collided with a U.S. vessel near the Mexican border, leaving one passenger dead.

Federal charges filed Friday in San Diego say witnesses identified Jose Pina and Salvador Sanchez as the smuggling vessel’s operators.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said 20 people were aboard the 26-foot vessel, which was spotted before dawn Thursday near Encinitas.

Agents fired warning shots, the boats collided, and the smuggling boat capsized, the agency said.

One woman who was recovered from the water later died.
