2 charged with smug­gling peo­ple

Two men have been charged with im­mi­grant smug­gling af­ter a boat they al­legedly guided col­lided with a U.S. ves­sel near the Mex­i­can bor­der, leav­ing one pas­sen­ger dead.

Fed­eral charges filed Fri­day in San Diego say wit­nesses iden­ti­fied Jose Pina and Salvador Sanchez as the smug­gling ves­sel’s op­er­a­tors.

U.S. Cus­toms and Bor­der Pro­tec­tion said 20 peo­ple were aboard the 26-foot ves­sel, which was spot­ted be­fore dawn Thurs­day near Encini­tas.

Agents fired warn­ing shots, the boats col­lided, and the smug­gling boat cap­sized, the agency said.

One woman who was re­cov­ered from the wa­ter later died.
