But that has more to do with an easy group draw than any­thing else since the Ger­mans beat Ivory Coast, 10-0, and Thai­land, 4-0. Against their only qual­ity op­po­nent, Nor­way, the Ger­mans strug­gled to a 1-1 draw. They’ll need to step it up here against Pia Sund­hage’s fifth-ranked Swe­den, which is look­ing for its first win af­ter three draws. CHINA VS. CAMEROON

The buzz: Just the sec­ond African team to make it out of group play in a World Cup, Cameroon ap­pears on the verge of join­ing the sport’s elite teams af­ter a three-year as­cent that has in­cluded its twice win­ning a medal in the African Cham­pi­onships while play­ing in its first Olympics and first World Cup. Cameroon won twice in group play here and now faces a young, re­build­ing Chi­nese team that of­ten strug­gles to score.
