Oakland 4, Angels 1
KEY MOMENT: The Athletics snapped a 1-1 tie with a three-run sixth inning, Stephen Vogt sparking the rally with a leadoff single. Ben Zobrist grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Josh Reddick stayed back on a Jered Weaver curve and drove it into the left-field corner for an opposite-field run-scoring double and a 2-1 lead. Weaver struck out Ike Davis, but Brett Lawrie lined a first-pitch RBI double to left for a 3-1 lead, and Josh Phegley banged reliever Cam Bedrosian’s first pitch to left for an RBI double and a 4-1 lead.
AT THE PLATE: The Angels put runners on second and third with two outs in the second and third innings, but A’s starter Jesse Hahn struck out Kyle Kubitza with a big over-hand curve to end the second and got Albert Pujols to fly to center to end the third. The Angels tied the score, 1-1, in the sixth when Mike Trout singled, Pujols walked and Erick Aybar hit an RBI single to center, but they were held to three runs or fewer for the 35th time in 69 games. Oakland scored its first run on back-to-back doubles by Marcus Semien and Vogt in the first.
ON THE MOUND: Angels left-hander Cesar Ramos relieved Bedrosian in the seventh and escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam to keep the score close. A’s closer Tyler Clippard got the final four outs for his 11th save.
UPON FURTHER REVIEW: Manager Mike Scioscia has been frustrated by several instant-replay calls that haven’t gone his way, but he won an eighth-inning challenge involving Pujols on Saturday. First-base umpire Chris Segal initially called Lawrie safe on a grounder to second, ruling that Pujols juggled the throw from Johnny Giavotella. After review, it was determined the bobble came on the glove-to-hand transition, and Lawrie was called out. “We got one,” Scioscia said.
REHAB REPORT: Reliever Mike Morin, out since May 24 because of a left rib-cage strain, will begin a minor league rehabilitation stint with the Angels’ Arizona Summer League team on Monday and join triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday. He will need at least four appearances before being activated.
UP NEXT: Right-hander Garrett Richards (7-4, 3.59 ERA) will oppose Oakland left-hander Scott Kazmir (3-4, 2.84 ERA) at Oakland Coliseum at 1 p.m. TV: FS West; Radio: 710, 830, 1330.
