Peru makes semifinals of Copa America

Paulo Guerrero’s hat trick led Peru to a 3- 1 win against Bolivia at Temuco, Chile, securing a place in the semifinals of the Copa America.

Peru faces host Chile on Monday in the semifinals. On Friday, Argentina plays Colombia in a quarterfin­al, and Brazil faces Paraguay on Saturday in the other.

Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey was handed a minimum two- year suspension from the U. S. Open Cup and a second f ine for his conduct toward a referee in a game last week.

The penalty announced Thursday by a U. S. Soccer Federation panel was in addition to a three- game league ban and f ine announced last week by Major League Soccer.

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark reached the semifinals of the grasscourt tournament at Eastbourne, England, for the third consecutiv­e year, beating Andrea Petkovic, 7- 5, 6- 1. Agnieszka Radwanska of Polan also won easily, beating Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, 6- 2, 6- 2. American Sloane Stephens had a walkover against ailing Daria Gavrilova.

Gilles Simon and Leonardo Mayer were eliminated from the grasscourt Nottingham Open in England, leaving an unlikely lineup for the semifinals. The second- seeded Simon was beaten, 5- 7, 7- 6 ( 8), 6- 4, by Sam Querrey of the United States, and fourthseed­ed Mayer lost, 6- 3, 6- 7 ( 8), 7- 6 ( 6), to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. Istomin will face Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus and Querrey will play Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Longtime area horse racing trainer Sandy Shulman died last week. Shulman, 78, won two training titles at Hollywood Park and two at Fairplex. He retired in 2010 with 804 wins, 743 seconds and 786 thirds, an impressive 33% in- the- money showing. Among his top horses were stakes winners Thirst For Peace and Champion Lodge.

Authoritie­s in Las Vegas have charged Hall of Fame defensive lineman Warren Sapp with biting his girlfriend, throwing her to the ground and stepping on her head in an April incident that began at the M Resort in Henderson, Nev.

The criminal complaint f iled Thursday in Las Vegas Justice Court charges Sapp with three domestic battery misdemeano­rs.

Florida State freshman quarterbac­k De’Andre Johnson has been suspended indefinite­ly from the team. Coach Jimbo Fisher announced Johnson’s suspension Thursday for a violation of athletic department policy. The school released no details, but there were reports that Johnson was allegedly involved in an altercatio­n Wednesday night at a Tallahasse­e bar.
