Peru makes semi­fi­nals of Copa Amer­ica

Paulo Guer­rero’s hat trick led Peru to a 3- 1 win against Bo­livia at Te­muco, Chile, se­cur­ing a place in the semi­fi­nals of the Copa Amer­ica.

Peru faces host Chile on Mon­day in the semi­fi­nals. On Fri­day, Ar­gentina plays Colom­bia in a quar­ter­fi­nal, and Brazil faces Paraguay on Satur­day in the other.

Seat­tle Sounders for­ward Clint Dempsey was handed a min­i­mum two- year sus­pen­sion from the U. S. Open Cup and a sec­ond f ine for his con­duct to­ward a ref­eree in a game last week.

Ag­nieszka Rad­wan­ska of Polan also won easily, beat­ing Tsve­tana Pironkova of Bulgaria, 6- 2, 6- 2. Amer­i­can Sloane Stephens had a walkover against ail­ing Daria Gavrilova.

Gilles Si­mon and Leonardo Mayer were elim­i­nated from the grass­court Not­ting­ham Open in Eng­land, leav­ing an un­likely lineup for the semi­fi­nals. The sec­ond- seeded Si­mon was beaten, 5- 7, 7- 6 ( 8), 6- 4, by Sam Quer­rey of the United States, and fourth­seeded Mayer lost, 6- 3, 6- 7 ( 8), 7- 6 ( 6), to De­nis Is­tomin of Uzbek­istan. Is­tomin will face Mar­cos Bagh­datis of Cyprus and Quer­rey will play Ukraine’s Alexandr Dol­go­polov.

Long­time area horse rac­ing trainer Sandy Shul­man died last week. Shul­man, 78, won two train­ing ti­tles at Hol­ly­wood Park and two at Fair­plex. He re­tired in 2010 with 804 wins, 743 sec­onds and 786 thirds, an im­pres­sive 33% in- the- money show­ing. Among his top horses were stakes win­ners Thirst For Peace and Cham­pion Lodge.

Author­i­ties in Las Ve­gas have charged Hall of Fame de­fen­sive line­man War­ren Sapp with bit­ing his girl­friend, throw­ing her to the ground and step­ping on her head in an April in­ci­dent that be­gan at the M Re­sort in Hen­der­son, Nev.

The crim­i­nal com­plaint f iled Thurs­day in Las Ve­gas Jus­tice Court charges Sapp with three do­mes­tic bat­tery mis­de­meanors.

Florida State fresh­man quar­ter­back De’An­dre John­son has been sus­pended in­def­i­nitely from the team. Coach Jimbo Fisher an­nounced John­son’s sus­pen­sion Thurs­day for a vi­o­la­tion of ath­letic depart­ment pol­icy. The school re­leased no de­tails, but there were re­ports that John­son was al­legedly in­volved in an al­ter­ca­tion Wed­nes­day night at a Tal­la­has­see bar.
