James Beard Foun­da­tion Award­win­ning chef Batali and his fam­ily head to the Michigan coast ev­ery year. “To me, it’s not only sum­mer; it ’s f reedom, tra­di­tion and a time to un­plug,” the Iron Chef, au­thor and chef/owner of sev­eral restau­rants says. Batali sets a sim­ple ta­ble. “There are al­ways these amaz­ing finds at the beach, and that’s what we use as dé­cor.” Sand, driftwood and shells be­come the cen­ter­piece atop a sim­ple oil­cloth table­cloth. Mu­sic is al­ways play­ing in the back­ground: “Early in the day, I’ll play Bach cello con­cer­tos with YoYo Ma, then Dave Brubeck and the All­man Broth­ers. From there it’s Jack White and Detroit Mo­town.”
