Mario’s Michigan Beach Party
James Beard Foundation Awardwinning chef Batali and his family head to the Michigan coast every year. “To me, it’s not only summer; it ’s f reedom, tradition and a time to unplug,” the Iron Chef, author and chef/owner of several restaurants says. Batali sets a simple table. “There are always these amazing finds at the beach, and that’s what we use as décor.” Sand, driftwood and shells become the centerpiece atop a simple oilcloth tablecloth. Music is always playing in the background: “Early in the day, I’ll play Bach cello concertos with YoYo Ma, then Dave Brubeck and the Allman Brothers. From there it’s Jack White and Detroit Motown.”
